On the Road- Day One

The perfect first day is behind me. I have learned many lessons and am pleased to share them with my many fans.

Lesson Number One- organization is the key to a successful road trip.

This is my carefully packed camper... I left plenty of room for road purchases.

Lesson Number Two - women or people in general who are inexperienced with "smart" phones should not shop in the App store alone.

A GPS application is not the same as a GPS.

GPS APPLICATIONS on a smart phone eat phone batteries and data.  Thank you, Drew, for this advice although I should have called  a few hours earlier.

Observations
  • Winchester, Virginia is a lovely, Colonial era town with lovely, narrow streets. The downtown is also a test by fire for a one ton truck with dual wheels.  The Business Route is not your friend.

  •  Much of rural America has limited cell phone coverage
  • Negotiating a contract to sell your house on the road with limited cell phone coverage is not a good idea.

Scenic highlights

  • Holloway, Ohio is just as grim as Wheeling, West Virginia but it's on a small, winding rural  road instead of an interstate highway.
  • When you think small, winding rural roads will save you time over the interstate highway, you are wrong.

  • UPS tricks are everywhere and they drive almost as fast as the school buses on small, winding rural roads.
  • A One Ton Dual rear Pickup truck can fit on the small, winding rural roads with UPS trucks and buses.  You don't actually wet your pants when you think you will.

  • The view on the spectacular road trip sometimes isn't that spectacular.

  • When you pack your camper properly, you can easily find items you may need on the road.
  • When you just toss everything in, you cannot find the good camera.
  • Cell phones take less than stellar pictures.
  • When you turn your phone the wrong way, your photos come in upside down. When you edit your blog, that same picture is right side up... at least on the blogger's computer.  It's a myterious world.

When the afternoon light bathes the green grass of grim, southern Ohio, it looks as green as Ireland. Or maybe that's the sunglasses- thank you, Donna, for insisting that I buy them.

The Catholics have the prettiest churches in cities but the Methodists have the market on pretty rural churches.

When you hop out of a truck to view the soft afternoon life, your bladder will not be happy. When you dawdle on back country roads, you should not drink coffee or you should  carry a bucket.   When you get off the back country roads,  McDonalds are a happy sight. McDonalds have clean bathrooms.

Arriving at a friendly home and spending the night with old friends makes the whole thing worth it!
    Kathryn

  1. haha!! Funny observations from the road! You can be like Jackie Kerouac- which is a mix of a beat poet and Jackie O' (I think that describes you pretty well right???)
